Recently-charged Justin Bieber has retained the same law firm used by Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s friend and former driver, Alexander Lisi.
Seth Weistein, a lawyer for the high-profile firm of Greenspan Humphrey Lavine, has confirmed that he is working with Brian Greenspan, who has been retained as counsel for the young pop star. Bieber was charged on Wednesday in the December assault of a Toronto limo driver.
“The Toronto Police Service requested that Justin Bieber appear in Toronto to face an allegation of assault relating to an incident on December 29, 2013,” reads a statement emailed to Yahoo Canada News.
“We anticipate that this matter will be treated as a summary offence, the equivalent of a misdemeanor in the United States.
“Our position is that Mr. Bieber is innocent. As the matter is now before the court, it would be inappropriate to address the specifics of either the allegation or of the defence at this time.
It has seemed almost inevitable that the shooting stars of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and pop sensation Justin Bieber would collide eventually.
And finally, it seems they have. One day after Bieber was charged with assault and Ford was accused of ordering a jail-house attack on his sister’s ex-boyfriend, Ford spoke in defence of the young singer.
During an appearance on a Washington, D.C., sports radio show on Thursday, Ford refused to discuss his own legal troubles but said of the Biebs: “He’s a young guy, at 19 years old I wish I was as successful as he was. He’s 19 years old, think back to when you were 19.”
Toronto police have confirmed that Bieber was charged with assault stemming from a Dec. 29 incident in which a limo driver was struck in the head several times while driving in downtown Toronto.
He also faces charges in Miami of drag racing a rented Lamborghini while under the influence of alcohol and resisting arrest. On the same day of Bieber’s arrest, Ford was accused in a statement of claim of ordering a jailhouse attack on his sister’s ex-boyfriend.
But the connection doesn’t end there. Bieber is being represented by the same law firm retained by Ford’s friend Alexander (Sandro) Lisi, who is facing charges of drug trafficking and extortion stemming from an ongoing investigation.
Weinstein appeared with Lisi in October when he appeared in court on charges of trafficking drugs and extortion. Lisi was scheduled to appear at a closed-door pre-trial conference on Wednesday. Later that day, Bieber returned to Toronto and turned himself in to police.
Bieber is scheduled to appear in a Toronto court on March 10.
