Anticipation for a Canadian Oscar winner is mounting a day before the Academy Awards on Sunday.
In Canada as well as in Ethiopia, millions of people will be tuned to the Oscars to watch Abel Tesfaye AKA The Weeknd preform as well as, hopefully, be a recepient of the prestigious awards.
“I can’t wait to see him on Oscar’s stage . His talent makes me proud ” says Beemnet , an Ethiopian Canadian fan of The Weeknd .
The Weeknd is among the very few Black artists nominated in the largely criticized Oscar for luck of diversity in the nominations .
The Weeknd is among the very Canadian artists and the first Ethiopian to ever be nominated for such an honour.
Upon the news of his nomination in early January, The Weeknd expressed how proud he was of the honour.
” It can’t get more surreal than this. thank you for the recognition@TheAcademy . truly a proud moment.” He tweeted.
Several Hollywood actors are boycotting the Oscars this year because of the under representation of people of color in the nominations of the Academy Awards.
Other Canadians nominated are Rachel McAdams, nominated for best supporting actress in Spotlight – as well as movie such as The Revenant, Room, and A Girl in the River.
The Academy awards will be screened live on CTV at 6:30PM today.
