The Ethiopian candidate for the leadership of WHO , Dr Tedros Adhanom was elected as the next Director General of World Health Organization(WHO)
Dr Tedros, beat the British contender in a three stage competition . According to BBC, Many Ethiopians erupted with joy up on the announcement of Tedrose’s victory while others were critical of the election citing that Adhanom failed to report Cholera break outs in Ethiopia during the time he was minister of health.
Dr Tedros Adhanom will succeed Dr Margaret Chan, who has been WHO’s Director-General since 2007.
Prior to his election as WHO’s next Director-General, Dr Tedros served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ethiopia from 2012–2016 and as Minister of Health, Ethiopia from 2005–2012.
