According ot the Ethiopian Orthodox church, the annual festival marks the finding of the true cross also known as “Maskal” by an ancient Ethiopian Queen, Eleni.
This year Mesqel was celebrated with several restrictions due to COVID. Usually, the celebration attracts thousands of spectators from all over the world.
The Ethiopian orthodox patriarch His Holiness Abune Martias and other government officials were in attendance.
The colorful chants by the choirs from various Ethiopian Orthodox churches showcased the true meaning and power of the cross during the festival.
As a tradition, people will also burn bonfires locally known as “Chibo” to gather around them and celebrate the fest.
