Dawit Tibebu will showcase his photos that are themed-“Freedom fighters”. Curated by Karen and Belinda Uwase, the photos will highlight the Ethiopian fighters during the Italian invasion in 1935.
Here is more description from the organizers .
Dawit Tibebu is an Ethiopian photojournalist living in Toronto who is interested in how photography and personal interviews can help to expose the not so obvious insight into the subject. Portraiture is a medium best used to capture subjects in an immortal fashion. This concept is especially relevant when considering the history portrayed in these images. In bringing the sitters’ stories to light, the artist offers a window into the personal stories of the subjects and brings the viewer into a relationship with each image as an examination of each layer of the overall narrative the collective of images tell.
In this series of portrait photographs the subjects don the military uniforms of their ancestors thus taking on the cloak of the “Freedom Fighters”- as a representation of the pride and hope their ancestors’ service represents to the family and nation they defended honorably in the Italo-Ethiopian conflict in 1935. On October 3, 1935 Italy invaded Ethiopia for the second time. The first attempt to colonize Ethiopia in 1895 failed in the battle of Adwa in 1896. The second attempt would see Abyssinian (modern day Addis Ababa) fall on May 5th 1936. The individuals pictured in this series would have been children during the conflict and thus the dawning of the military uniforms, medals and carrying of weapons holds special significance as family memorabilia. The objects worn and carried here are also a commentary on how objects can move from personal heirlooms, to historical artifacts in museums on display for others to examine. Transferred from personal ownership to the public institutional realm, the stories are not always transferred with the object, but there is opportunity for broader global appreciation when given historic and cultural context. Each story presented here is a window into family and memory, providing personal insights into public events of Global historical significance. In presenting this exhibition, we examine the process of straddling the private and public realms of storytelling.
