diabetes is one of the leading chromic conditions globally and in Canada. More than 422 million adults have diabetes . It affects more than 11.2 million Canadians . That means 29% of Canadians are currently diagnosed with diabetes or pre -diabetes.
According to the Canadian Diabetes Association , People with diabetes are over three times more likely to be hospitalized with cardiovascular disease, 12 times more likely to be hospitalized with end-stage renal disease, and almost 20 times more likely to be hospitalized for a nontraumatic lower limb amputation compared to the general population.
Certain populations are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, such as those of African, Arab, Asian, Hispanic, Indigenous, or South Asian descent, those who are older, have a lower level of income or education, are physically inactive, or are living with overweight or obesity.
Tips in managing Type-2 diabetes
- Eat healthy meals and snack, Eat less with small portions. Decrease sugar, bread and sodium intake . Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
- Enjoy regular physical activity with 150 minutes activity per week
- Monitor your blood sugar level regularly
- Maintain a healthy body weight
- Take your diabetes medications as prescribed.
- Maintain a balanced mental health by managing stress and anxiety reduces risks associated to diabetes.
