The Weeknd Donated $50,000 to a charitable organization based in Toronto, People to People Canada.
Ethiopian Canadian International music sensation The Weeknd has made headlines with his latest act of kindness. The multiple Grammy and Juno award-winning artist has donated a generous $50,000 to the People to People Canada Aid Organization (P2P), a charity serving the community for over 23 years.
The donation was made after The Weeknd received the 2022 Allan Slaight Humanitarian Award, and he chose P2P as the recipient charity. At the 23rd Anniversary Gala Dinner of P2P, the President, Mesrak Lissanu, expressed gratitude for the singer’s contribution, stating that it will go a long way in expanding the organization’s activities and making a difference in the community.
“Abel, as much as you shine in the global stage with your music, you shine even brighter in your dedication to making a difference in the lives of the less fortunate “says Mesrak.
It is the second time Abel received The Allan Slaight Award.
The global success of Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye makes every Canadian proud. What Abel has done with his success is something that we can be doubly proud of–and this is to improve the lives of people in need, in Canada and around the world. His altruism, in a word, is exemplary,” says Gary Slaight, President and CEO of The Slaight Family Foundation
P2P is committed to improving the lives of hundreds of orphans and vulnerable children in Ethiopia through its Orphan Sponsorship Program and community-based health awareness initiatives.
The charity has recently broadened its focus to include Youth Mental Health awareness and education through its Sound the Horn (STH) Program. The STH program is a community-based mental health engagement initiative led by the P2P youth group, aimed at breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly among young people.
To achieve this goal, P2P is undertaking two initiatives:
1. Mentorship Program: This program directly engages with youth, especially those transitioning, such as those moving from high school to college or university, entering the workforce, or newly arrived in Canada. The program provides mentorship and support to these young people.
2. Asset Map for the Community: In addition to the mentorship program, P2P is also developing an asset map of the community that will increase awareness of mental health resources available to youth.
This program aims to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and promote positive change in the Canadian community.
At the gala dinner, the theme of “A Better Tomorrow for All,” P2P emphasized its dedication to expanding its activities and making a difference in the community despite funding challenges and the impact of the pandemic.
Guest speakers, including the Executive Director of TAIBU Community Health Centre and the Executive Director of CEE Centre for Young Black Professionals, emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing mental health and other issues young people face.
The long-term partner of P2P in Ethiopia, Hiwot Integrated Development organization (HIDO) and its founding leader Loret Sister Tibebe Maco, was the keynote speaker and thanked the agency for its help in supporting thousands of orphaned and vulnerable children in Ethiopia.
P2P’s president Mesrak remarked that the Weeknd’s generous donation is a shining example of his genuine compassion and unwavering commitment to making a positive change in the world. Through his support of organizations like P2P, he is endorsing their mission to improve the lives of those in need and motivating others to follow in his footsteps. P2P has gained recognition for its extraordinary impact on society and is working towards a brighter future for everyone.
“Organizations, sponsors, funders, and our community must continue to support reputable organizations like P2P and play a role in making the world a better place. “
