Ethiopian Runner, Girma Tola, Achieves Victory with Record-Breaking Performance at the New York Marathon
Girma Tola, the accomplished Ethiopian athlete, claimed victory at the 2023 New York Marathon by securing first place and setting a new course record. In an amazing determination, Girma surged ahead, running the last six miles in isolation before crossing the finish line. Expressing his gratitude, he extended heartfelt appreciation to the enthusiastic New York fans who provided unwavering support throughout the race. Girma finished the race at 2:04:58 to break a 12 year old record of the New York Marathon.
In the fiercely competitive women’s category, the spotlight was on Letesenbet Gidey, the 10,000-meter and half-marathon world-record holder and a renowned figure. Letesenbet clinched the second position.
It was Kenya’s Hellem Obiri within the final 400 meters that ultimately earned her the gold medal clocking 2:27:23.
