Professor Beyene Petros, a prominent Ethiopian political figure and academic, passed away.
As the Chairman of the Ethiopian Social Democratic Party (ESODPA), he was revered as a symbol of peaceful political struggle.
Born on March 2, 1942, in the Hadya Zone, Professor Beyene made significant contributions to Ethiopia’s political landscape, including his role in coordinating opposition parties and representing the Southern Ethiopian People’s Democracy Union during the transition period after the Derg regime.
In addition to his political career, Professor Beyene was an esteemed biologist, earning degrees from the University of Wisconsin and Tulane University.
He taught at Addis Ababa University, led research on malaria, and published nearly 120 peer-reviewed articles.
Appointed as the fifth Director General of the National Institute for Policy Studies by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in 2022, Professor Beyene was honored for his dedication to Ethiopia’s political and academic spheres.
