With a municipal election completed in Toronto and a new mayor elected, the selection of a new police chief is now the talk of town. This is to replace a Mayor David Miller era appointee in Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair who is to vacate his position in early 2015.
The Toronto Police Services Board Chair, Alok Mukherjee, reflected with ethiofidel, how the board “needs to receive more suggestions for the coming few weeks on the selection of the Toronto residents”. Therefore, the board is consulting with residents at different locations and that will conclude tonight at the Police Headquarters on College Street.
At the North York consultation, an Ethiopian-Canadian activist, Samuel Getachew reflected how “We do not need to go far away to London, Atlanta anywhere else , we have qualified people in Canada to serve as Chief of police “. The well attended event of around 35 community leaders and activists heard on the top priorities of the ideal police chief. Participants brainstormed on the best qualities they want to see from the new Toronto police chief.
The board encourages residents and citizens to continue to be engaged to the selection process via its website – http://www.tpsb.ca/.
