South Africans Attacking foreigners in various cities ”Ethiopians are not criminals Why are they killing us . Please Don’t kill us. Don’t finish us, we are your blood , we are Africans “ says Ephrem, the representative of the Ethiopian community in Durban , Ephrem explained to South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) that many stores were looted and foreigners were indiscriminately attacked . Explaining the situation, Ephrem said there are other Ethiopians kidnapped whose whereabouts are unknown. The violence started when xenophobic locals in Durban started attacking foreigners and looted their stores .The xenophobic attackers accused foreigners of taking their jobs and create unemployment in the country . Many observers commented that these can not justify the killings and looting. The south African police arrested as many as 50 individuals. However, the South African government has been criticized for not providing enough protection to foreigners.
To add to this, the South African president Jacob Zuma’s son argued in parliament that foreigners should be expelled from South Africa. They were met with criticisms from the members of parliament from the opposition parties.
Ethiopians around the world are expressing their anger and concerns about the situation of their compatriots in South Africa. Many argued on social media ,considering Ethiopia’s leading role in fighting Apartheid in South Africa, the atrocities committed by south Africans against Ethiopians is unacceptable.
There is a sizable business community of Ethiopians in South Africa.
