As of now, if you are talking to police in Toronto, you might be recorded .But Toronto police said it is not a surveillance .
Toronto police launched a pilot project for the body-worn camera for police .
According to a news release by Toronto Police , Starting May 18, the cameras will be worn by 100 trained officers as a pilot project for one year.
Staff Sergeant Michael Barsky, said the cameras are implemented for a better engagement with communities
“This body-worn technology will give transparency to interactions that police have with the community, will build on, and strengthen, relationships we have with the community,” says Barsky.
Many raised concerns around privacy of the public when videotape by police.
Especialy, the biggest concern is weather there will be a use of camera during carding of individuals .
The privacy commissioner of Canada Daniel Therrien quated by CBC as saying
“There are clearly benefits to the use of body-worn cameras, however, there are also significant privacy implications,” said Daniel Therrien, privacy commissioner of Canada, in a statement. “Given this, and as more and more policing organizations consider adopting this technology, we are encouraging them to address those privacy issues upfront to ensure they strike the right balance between law enforcement needs and the privacy rights of Canadians.”
A survey, as part of the pilot project ,to be sent to 20,000 households is expected to address these issues .
