Toronto historian pledges to match 50,000 for Ethiopian Studies.
The Toronto University professor , Dr. Michael Gervers promised to match any contribution made for the development of Ethiopian Studies at the university of Toronto
Speaking at a recent Bikila awards in Toronto, the professor urged Ethiopians to consider what other newcomer communities are doing in reserving their heritage .
He calls on the the Ethiopian community in Toronto to help him in the creation of chairmanship in Ethiopian studies at the University of Toronto . And he is ready to assist as well ” I will match any contribution you make between now and the end of the year for up to a maximum of 50 thousand dollars “
The professor is engaged in multiple projects around Ethiopia’s historic sites for the past 25 years . He received a grant to work on a documentary about the rock hewn churches of Lalibela . In this regard, he requested a helping hand from Ethiopian community in Toronto.
He is also offering a course on Ethiopian History at the university of Toronto , which is the unique course about Ethiopian History in North America
Dr. Gervers is also director of “mezgebe Saalat ” (treasury of Ethiopian art ) an online data base of Ethiopian art with 65,000 images ,most of which was taken by himself during his visit to Ethiopia between 1982 and 2008.
