The Bikila award of Toronto presented recognition to Ethiopians that have made contributions to their country and to the wider society.
In a dazzling ceremony at Daniel’s spectrum of downtown Toronto, the awards were presented in various categories.
Dr. Gezahegn Wordofa whose contribution to life changing impacts on newcomers was awarded excellence in community awards .
He pioneered the newcomers support programs as a volunteer in his home town Stratford, Ontario. Dr. Gezahegn who was once featured on our site, ethiofidel.com, also won the RBC top 25 immigrants award last year.
Actress playwright , poet and director Alemtsehaye wodajo was this year’ s Bikila’s favorite in the professional excellence award for her distinguished career in the Ethiopian theater and art stream .
The Pankhurst family , who immensely contribute to the modern Ethiopoan history and heritage, were given the life time achievement award. The Pankhurst played key role in having Ethiopian historic monuments and artifacts return to Ethiopia.
An exemplary activism in helping the under served parts of society and youth education in Ethiopia as well as North America earned Dr. Tegest Hailu, MD, a community service excellence award .
A physician in Bratford ontario and a dedicated physician, Dr. Fikire Germa recieved a professional excellence award. According to Bikila award,Dr. Fikre made a remarkable contribution in medical care in Ethiopia.
Bikilas award also goes to Dr . Girma Bitsuamlak for his distinguished accomplishment in wind enginering and mentorship as a scholar and researcher.
The event saw a line up of high profile speakers including the prolific writer chancellor Lemin Sisay , the NASA scientist Dr. Brook Lakew and the notable Ethiopian scientist professor Sosina Haile.
