Google Staff in Support of a Fired Staff -Timnit Gebru

Staff at Google are rallying behind the recently fired Artificial Intelegence researcher Timnit Gebru .

In a letter they signed hundreds of Google employees accused the company of racism and censorship . BBC reported that Google denied the allegations and said Timinit resigned from her post .

Several people are now campaigning in protest to what they called research censorship on the part of google. In a statement from the the #ISupportTimnit #BelieveBlackWomen movement opn Twitter, several people denounced the termination of Dr. Timnit Gebru’s employement with Google.

“We, the undersigned, stand in solidarity with Dr. Timnit Gebru, who was terminated from her position as Staff Research Scientist and Co-Lead of Ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI) team at Google, following unprecedented research censorship. We call on Google Research to strengthen its commitment to research integrity and to unequivocally commit to supporting research that honors the commitments made in Google’s AI Principles” says their statement .

Google responded to the allegations saying that Dr. Timinit resigned . According to BBC , Jeff Dean, a senior manager at Google dealing with AI Research. wrote the following response ” Timnit responded with an email requiring that a number of conditions be met in order for her to continue working at Google, including revealing the identities of every person who [we] had spoken to and consulted as part of the review of the paper and the exact feedback.

“Timnit wrote that if we didn’t meet these demands, she would leave Google and work on an end date. We accept and respect her decision to resign from Google,” Mr Dean wrote.

The Eritrean American Timnit Gebru is a prominent researcher in ethics and artificial intelligence . Her works in racial bias are well regarded .
