Ethiopian Canadian PhD student, Zerihun Kinate, has joined Elite Africa Project at the University of Toronto.

Zerihun Kinate, an Ethiopian Canadian scholar has joined Elite Africa Project ( EAP). The team is comprised of  eminent professors, emerging scholars and professionals working on Africa around the world. According to the EAP, Zerihun is selected and hired due to his connection and tremendous active engagements serving with the African and Ethiopian diaspora communities in Canada. He’s been serving in board leadership capacities in several organizations.

Zerihun will be managing the research works and collaboration networks with partners by developing profiles of prominent academicians, organizations and influential individuals working on Africa. The project’s purpose is to serve as resource center and a hub for researchers, scholars, leaders, policy makers, practitioners and advocacy groups. The main goal of the project is to change the image and media presentation of Africa in the West. It strives to engaging various audiences and actors in framing African stories and how we define our knowledge of the continent and its people.

The mission of Elite Africa Project in studying the prominent, the powerful, and the prosperous—Africans who wield power on a continental or global scale—in a part of the world often dismissed as marginal is remarkably important. The project seeks to leverage the insights of an interdisciplinary group of scholars to shift how Africa and its elites are understood.”

“Our goal is to challenge academic and public perceptions of African elites as grasping and self-interested—a framing that perpetuates negative depictions of the continent and its peoples and draws on a simplistic understanding of power and how it is wielded.” says Zerihun.

The project will be officially launched in January 2024. Zerihun told ethiofidel.com that the project is actively seeking and welcomes the support, collaborations and partnerships of individuals and organizations in the diaspora as well as in Africa.

The project is funded by the Canadian government Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SHRCC) and the University of Toronto, including the Department of Political Science, the Office of the Vice-President, International, the Faculty of Arts and Science, the Department of History, the Department for the Study of Religion, and the Department of Anthropology.
